Climb TungurahuaGuided expedition · Ecuador

Climb Tungurahua, a 5,023 m active volcano rising above the town of Baños and one of the highest active volcanoes you can climb. This guided Tungurahua expedition by PEAKS follows the Pondoa route to the crater rim, with certified national mountain guides and full logistics from Riobamba.

The climb gains roughly 2,000 m over two days: a forested ascent to the refuge on day one, then a pre-dawn summit push to the crater on day two. A helmet is mandatory on this active volcano, and crampons are used if snow is present.

With its steep, sustained ascent, Tungurahua is often used as a 'pre-Chimborazo' fitness and altitude test. It is a rewarding objective for well-trained hikers building toward Ecuador's glaciated summits.

FAQ

Is the summit guaranteed?
No. This is a summit attempt on an active volcano and depends on weather and volcanic conditions; safety comes first.
Is it safe to climb an active volcano?
We monitor official volcanic activity and only operate when conditions are safe. A helmet is mandatory throughout.
How hard is it compared to Chimborazo?
Tungurahua is non-technical but very sustained, which is why many climbers use it as a 'pre-Chimborazo' test.
How do I book and what does it cost?
Prices are quoted on request. Enquire on WhatsApp and confirm with a non-refundable deposit.
